A cake rich in history

The Royal Connection

We have Queen Victoria to thank for the popularity of this wonderful cake. She loved tea parties, insisted that everyone dressed formally for the occasion, and this simple cake was her absolute favourite.

Queen Victoria embraced the new craze for tea parties, and by 1855 this simple cake was one of her favourites. After the death of her husband, Prince Albert, in 1861, she spent time in retreat at Osborne House, her residence on the Isle of Wight, and according to historians it was here that the cakes were named after her.
